QUESTIONS & ANSWERS: GLOSSARY

Haemophilia

A group of inherited (genetically determined) diseases which cause bleeding due to an inability of the blood to clot properly (impaired coagulation). They require treatment, if possible with the missing factor(s) in the blood. Of particular interest to us is that these patients are protected against coronary heart disease (CHD) and coronary thrombosis, indicating the crucial role played by thrombosis in CHD.
