QUESTIONS & ANSWERS: GLOSSARY

Acid

The stomach produces acid which can sometimes go backwards up into the gullet in the chest or throat, and cause chest pain. The problem can be counteracted by sipping milk or liquid anti-indigestion remedies. More severe episodes may need treatment with drugs that antagonise the "H2 receptors" of the stomach or with "proton inhibitors". Advice should be sought from a doctor about the need for these prescriptions, some of which are then available over the counter.
